Biographie de Musicatreize
Musicatreize was founded in 1987 by Roland Hayrabedian. Since then, the ensemble has been promoting the musical repertoire of the 20th century, adding to it new works, juxtaposing eras and styles and establishing a focus for contemporary music in the South of France.
-
Ensemble of varying dimensions, Musicatreize is a seasoned performer on a wide variety of stages and settings, from the pared-down concert to full musical theatre. Juggling different esthetics, Musicatreize finds links between Roland de Lassus (Prophetiae Sibyllarum) and Maurice Ohana (Office des oracles), Franz Schubert (Gesang der Geister über den Wassern) and Michel Petrossian (Amours sidoniennes) or encore Clément Janequin (Il estoit une fillette) and Philippe Schoeller (Eros-One) or Régis Campo (Secouez-moi).
Musicatreize is dedicated to musical creation without any aesthetic bias, simply seeking a sensitive and original approach, with a Mediterranean spirit. The musical line of thinking ranges from Alberto Posadas to Tapio Tuomela, from Edith Canat de Chizy to Oscar Strasnoy, from Lucien Guérinel to Zad Moultaka or from Gérard Grisey to António Chagas Rosa. Musicatreize often offers young composers their first opportunity to write for a vocal ensemble.
In its more than 30-year history, Musicatreize has created a long-term relationship between musicians and composers. With more than 300 new works, usually organized in cycles (Les Berceuses, Les Sept contes, Odyssées dans l’espace, Voix Prioritaire, Trois Cantates policières, Les Douze lettres à Elise) and always accompanied by pedagogical activities, Musicatreize has developed a strong network with its public.
In 2007 Musicatreize won the « Victoire de la Musique classique » award. The Ensemble and its Concert Hall will from 2020 National Center for Vocal Art (Centre national d’art vocal / CNAV) coordinating resources and practices in the vocal arts for the South of France.

Since forming the “Choeur Contemporain” in 1978 and Musicatreize in 1987, Roland Hayrabedian has been in continuous contact with musical creation. He is also guest conductor at the Choeur and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre national des Pays de Loire, the Orchestre national de Lorraine, the Orchestre d’Avignon, the Orchestre de Cannes, the National Choir of Ireland, the Nederlands Kammerkoor, the Orchestre des Jeunes de la Mé-diterranée. He has collaborated with groups like Percussions de Strasbourg, 2e2m, TM+, Musique vivante, Musique oblique, L’Itinéraire.
In the 90’s Roland Hayrabedian records Stravinsky’s « Wedding » together with Ohana’s « Cantigas », this CD won him wide acclaim. In 1992 his recording of Ohana’s « Llanto por Ignacio Sanchez Meijas » won the French award « Victoire de la musique classique ». Many other recordings and awards followed.
Roland fosters links, in the form of cycles, between one creation and another. His concerts blend standard repertoire with many key 20th century pieces and premieres of contemporary works. Commissioning works from numerous contemporary composers worldwide, his approach involves establishing a long-term relationship with a composer, so that a mutual understanding enriches their work. This group of key composers include Maurice Ohana, Felix Ibarrondo, Edith Canat de Chizy, Zad Moultaka, Philippe Gouttenoire, Jean-Christophe Marti, Philippe Hersant, Michel Petrossian, among others.
Roland is currently teacher in the Conservatoire de Marseille and in the IESM - Superior Institute of Music in Aix-en-Provence.
